Guide to Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda

Guide to Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda : Hosting huge population of majestic gorillas, Rwanda is a great place to trek through the magnificent mountainsides to catch glimpses of these spectacular creatures. Gorilla trekking is deem a once-in-lifetime experience and it can be a bit strenuous for some travelers. Also, it has a high price tag, however it is worth every single coin as you will get an opportunity to immerse yourself in the beauty of Rwanda and get to spent one hour with the world’s most magical creatures in their natural habitat.

Here is what travelers need to know before embarking gorilla trekking adventure in Rwanda.

History of Gorilla Trekking

Gorilla Trekking was introduced in Rwanda and Uganda as a form of sustainable wildlife tourism to support the conservation of mountains which were categorized as “critically endangered at a time”. After its introduction, both populations of mountains (Bwindi and in the Virunga) have seen significant growth in numbers and now they are categorized as “endangered”.

Guide to Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda

Gorilla tourism remains an important foundation for much of the conservation and community development in both areas, with efforts to continue the preservation of these creatures, only 96 trekking permits are issued daily allowing groups of only 8 to visit the 12 habituated gorilla families in Rwanda.

Mountain Gorillas in Rwanda inhabit the gentler slopes of Volcanoes National Park which are more open bush compared to the Ugandan counterparts (Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park), these are more difficult to trek.

Travel Tip – it is guaranteed that you will see mountain gorillas while trekking in Rwanda.

In Rwanda, the trekking permits cost US$ 1500 per person per trek, the price doubles the price of Uganda gorilla permits at US $ 800. Also, the altitude in Rwanda is greater as trekking generally takes place between 8,200 – 9,800 feet.

Where to do gorilla trekking in Rwanda

What to Expect

Before your gorilla trek, you will meet the Volcanoes National Park Headquarters for a safety briefing and to meet your group and guides. Your guide will then lead you to the starting point and enter into the forests looking for mountain gorillas, all tracker guides are experienced in looking for signs of gorillas’ location. They track the gorillas using footprint, dung, chewed bamboo stalks and abandoned nests.

Guide to Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda

Gorillas normally soil nests and then abandon them to build new ones each night and trackers are able to tell the age of the nests as well as which group made them (though this can be more difficult on rainy days).

While walking to your designated gorilla family, guides will generally allow time to stop and rest along the trail. They tend to hike at a steady pace throughout the excursion, for they must be mindful of the time to ensure that you will be able to reach the gorillas, spend a full one hour with them and make it back down the trail in a timely manner. The hour time frame is set to avoid causing the animals any undue stress or getting them overly used to human interactions which can disrupt their nature.

For guests with physical limitations or disabilities, there is the option to have porters who safely carry guests for the duration of the hike using specialized equipment. Guests are required to inform their tour leaders if they require these services ahead of time, to ensure all necessary equipment is onsite for your trek.

If for some reasons unable to complete the trek to the gorillas, you will either be able to return immediately to the base of the trail with a porter, or you will be asked to remain where you are with a porter until the group returns.

Reaching the Gorillas

Before reaching the gorillas, it is possible to smell them and for your guides and trackers to soft grunting noises as away of assuring the group that friends are approaching (the gorillas’ vocalizations are used as reassurance for other family members). It is most likely that you will view the gorillas during their midday lounging period, during this time the dominant male – the silverback lounges on trees while youngsters roll around in the vegetation and females nurse and play with the infants.

Guide to Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda

Once you have reached the gorillas, everyone will crouch down while observing them so that the dominant male gorillas can see you all the time. This also ensures that you don’t pose a threat to, or overwhelm the gorillas. touching the gorillas at any point is strictly forbidden, even if one approaches your group.

Additionally, a traveler must never stare directly into the eyes of the gorillas as this is viewed aggressively. Looking sideways and maintaining a subservient stance is key especially if a gorilla comes charging (they do this as a way to release tension or display for the rest of the group).

What to Wear

Regardless of the season you are visiting Rwanda for gorilla trekking, it is crucial to pack for all weather conditions as they can change rapidly in the forests. Prior to travel, check with your tour operator or lodging to see if they provide any complimentary trekking gear, so as to lessen your packing load.

Below is a list of items

  • A small, lightweight, frameless, waterproof back/day pack – for personal items, cameras, jacket layers among other
  • Waterproof hiking boots or shoes with treaded soles (high ankle preferred)
  • Hiking socks (wools or polyester and long enough to tuck your pants into)
  • For film and digital cameras, bring plenty of high-speed film or inform yourself how to alter the speed settings on your camera (no flash photography is allowed when visiting the animals)
  • Heavy canvas (gardening-style) gloves, these will be available to borrow from lodges of you do not bring your own
  • Waterproof or moisture wicking pants – lightweight but thick enough to avoid stinging nettles or thorny branches
  • Breathable long sleeves to protect arms from thorns and nettles
  • Wide hat for sun protection and coverage from branches
  • Walking sticks, additional water bottle and packed lunches will be provided
  • While staying at your lodge, comfortable clothing meals and relaxation, no dress code requirements
  • Pack dull colored clothes such as green, black and khaki. Bright colored clothes are not recommended as they attract insects and distract the gorillas.

What is mountain gorilla trekking?

What is mountain gorilla trekking? : Mountain Gorilla trekking is a highlight of most of the safaris to Uganda and Rwanda that are home to the rare mountain gorillas. However, what actually is gorilla trekking. If you have had the experience before then you know of the joy that comes with this lifetime activity, however, if you haven’t yet here is what gorilla trekking means;

Gorilla trekking is an activity where tourists take a hike / walk through the jungle forests in search of mountain gorillas. The trek takes about 2-6 hours and this time is when the trekkers move in the jungle searching for where the gorillas spent their previous night.

Gorillas are trekked in different locations each time because they make new nests every day and therefore sleep in different places each day. Gorilla trekking is referred to as a hike because you will have to walk on an altitude of 2,607 meters above sea level on a rugged surface with narrow valleys intersected by rivers and steep hills.

Uganda gorilla trekking offers that up-close encounter with the still pristine jungles and this experience of fully being immersed and experiencing the wild that makes the whole experience unique.

What to expect on a gorilla trekking safari

Before heading out to the jungle for gorilla trekking, expect to have a briefing session that starts at 8:00am both in Rwanda or Uganda’s national parks. Briefing starts from 8:00 am local time and at this time, you are briefed about the gorilla trekking etiquette be it for Uganda or Rwanda.

During the briefing the park rangers reecho the guidelines on what you should and should not do in the jungle. Still as you have your Uganda gorilla safari briefing, you are allocated a gorilla family to trek.

Make sure to inform the rangers of your hiking ability such that you are allocated a family that you are able to trek.

What is mountain gorilla trekking?

After briefing, you head out to the jungle for gorilla trekking. The time spent trekking gorillas in the forests is unpredictable since they are wild animals and keep moving.

The time you spend in the forest can be as less as 30 minutes or as much as 6 hours and more, it’s all about what Mother Nature decides to offer you.

You will be accompanied by an armed ranger who will lead you to where the gorillas are and tell you much more of all the information about the gorilla family you are trekking as well as gorillas in general.

When you get to meet the gorillas, the excitement will be with a sigh of relief as your guide informs you to get ready to see the family and take pictures.

A maximum of 1 hour is spent in the presence of the gorillas as you have the opportunity to take all of those stunning memorable pictures of finally coming face to face with the giant apes of the jungle.

Make sure to take as many photos and record as many videos as you can, using a non-flash photography camera.

After spending your valuable 60 minutes with the Ugandan gorillas, you then are led by your ranger guide back to the park headquarters.

The return is one with memories and not anxiousness as with the search. Arriving at the park headquarters, you are welcomed back and then given a Rwanda or Uganda gorilla trekking safari certificate which is recognition for a complete trek.

With this you have an idea of what gorilla trekking is, however, this isn’t actually the same exact experience, it’s always different with each trek and therefore you can best explain yours when you book a trip with Ugandan gorilla Rwanda and go gorilla trekking.

Kilimanjaro Hiking Tour , Mount Kilimanjaro

Kilimanjaro hiking tours ; Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest peak in Africa and the tallest free-standing Mountain in the world at an elevation of 5,895 meters (19,341 feet), the mountain is found in the North of Tanzania near the Kenya border.

The massif of Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest point in Africa, the mountain lies about 100 miles (160 kilometers) east of the East African Rift System and about 140 miles (225 kilometers) south of Nairobi, Kenya. The massif extends approximately East – west for 50 miles (80 kilometers) and consists of three principal extinct volcanoes that are

  • Kibo (Centre)
  • Mawensi (East) and
  • Shira (west)
  • Kibo – the youngest and highest. This volcano retains the form of a typical volcanic cone and crater and is linked by a 7 – mile (11 kilometers) saddle at about 15,000 feet (4,500 meters) with Mawensi (16,893 feet/5,149 meters) which is the older core of a former summit.
  • Shira Ridge – 13,000 feet/ 3,962 meters, shira is a remnant of an earlier crater.

Below the saddle, Kilimanjaro slopes are in a typical volcanic curve to the plains below which lie at an elevation of about 3,300 feet (1,000 meters). The dome of Kibo is clad with snow and contains a caldera (crater) on its Southern side that is 1.2 miles (2 kilometers) across and about 980 feet (300 meters) deep with an inner cone that displays residual volcanic activity.

Mawensi’s cone is highly eroded, jagged and precipitous and is cleft east and west by gorges, only Kibo retains a permanent ice cap, Mawensi has a semi – permanent ice patches and substantial seasonal snow.

Mount Kilimanjaro and its surrounding forests were designated as a game reserve in the early part of the 20th century, in 1973, Mount Kilimanjaro national park was established to protect the mountain above the tree line as well as the six forest corridors that extend downslope through the montane forest belt. In 1987, the park was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Mount Kilimanjaro has a series of vegetation zones (from base to summit) consisting of the semi-arid scrub of the surrounding plateau, the massif’s cultivated, well- western southern slopes, dense cloud forest, open moorland, alpine desert and moss and lichen communities.

The volcano hosts two notable species that grow in the moorlands are the giant lobelia and the giant groundsel.

Location of Nyerere National park

Mount Kilimanjaro is located in Northeastern Tanzania, near the Kenya border. This volcanic massif lies about 100 miles (160 kilometers) east of the East African Rift System and about 140 miles (225 kilometers) south of Nairobi, Kenya.

The whole area lies between 2 ̊ 45’ to 3̊ 25’ S and 37 ̊ 00’ to 37 ̊ 43 (not far south of the equator)

What is the highest peak of Kilimanjaro

Mount Kilimanjaro central cone, Kibo is the highest peak rising to 19,340 feet (5,895 meters) and is the highest point in Africa, Kibo is the youngest of the 3 principle extinct volcanoes of Kilimanjaro and retains the form of a typical volcanic cone and crater.

Who the first to climb Kilimanjaro

The Kibo Summit of Kilimanjaro was first reached in 1889 by the German geographer Hans Meyer and the Austrian mountaineer Ludwig Purtscheller.

Geology of Moutain Kilimanjaro

  • Mount Kilimanjaro is a gigantic stratovolcano
  • Mount Kilimanjaro is a dormant volcano, however the time it last erupted is not yet enough to declare it extinct
  • Mount Volcano is the largest volcano in the East – West belt of volcanoes located in Northern Tanzania
  • The formation of Mount Kilimanjaro began around 750,000 years back
  • Mount Kilimanjaro has 3 main volcanic peaks (Shira, Mawenzi and Kibo) and a number of smaller parasitic cones, shira is the oldest peak on the mountain while Kibo peak is the latest.
  • Kilimanjaro’s last major volcaic activity was in the past 360,000 years when Kibo erupted, the last volcanic activity happened about 200 years back and it formed the Ash pit that is present even today. The central ash pit measures 350 meters deep
  • Kibo has 2 concentric craters of 1.9 X 2.7 kilometers and 1.3 kilometers in diameter respectively.
  • Uhuru Peak is the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro as well as the while continent of Africa.
  • Since 1962, about 55% of Kilimanjaro’s glaciers have vanished, this is a strong indication of global warming or indicates the action of humidity caused by deforestation and clearing for farms. Today the total glacier area is roughly 2.5 square kilometers.
  • The latest prediction foretells that Mount Kilimanjaro may lose the plateau ice within the next 30 – 40 years but it may retained the sloping ice for a while.

Mount Kilimanjaro Climate

There are two rainy or wet seasons, the wet season is experienced from November to December and March to May and the driest times of the year are the months of August to October.

Rain fall decreases rapidly the higher you go up the mountains and 96% of all rain on Kilimanjaro falls below 3000 m, the mean rainfall per annum at the Marangu Gate (the start of Marangu route) is 2300 mm.

Above 4500 m, the conditions are semi- arid and desert-like, the mean rainfall per annum at Kibo Huts (highest hut on Marangu route) is below 200 mm.

The northern side of the mountain is also drier than the southern side, the months of January to March are the warmest months

Vegetation Zones on Mount Kilimanjaro

There are 5 main vegetation zones on Mount Kilimanjaro and these are as follows

  • Savannah bushland zone (700 – 1000 m on the southern side and 1400 – 1600 m on the northern side)
  • Sub-Montane agro forest zone (largely populated farmlands and plantations to the south and south – east).

  • Sub – alpine moorland and alpine bogs (the heath and moorland, 2800 – 4000 m)
  • Above this is the alpine desert zone·
  • Above this is the alpine desert zone

Climbing Mount Kiliimanjaro

Are gorillas dangerous?

Are gorillas dangerous? : With an understanding of how gorilla trekking is done, many tourists wonder whether the mountain gorillas are dangerous and is it safe to trek gorillas. This is a question of how safe a tourist will be during their gorilla trekking safari in Uganda or Rwanda is understandable since the activity gets one into the jungle which has several other wild animals. For first time trekkers from world over the question of; are gorillas dangerous? Is frequently asked and here is a guide on what you have to know about gorilla behavior,

are gorillas dangerous

Africa is known for its fearsome predators and mountain gorillas are not part of them, yes they are not dangerous.  Mountain gorillas are habituated for a period that lasts about 2 years before tourists are allowed to trek it and therefore they are used to seeing humans in their habitat and do not attack. What you should be assured of is that, on a Ugandan gorilla safari or Rwanda gorilla tour there’s no possibility of you going into the jungle alone. On each gorilla trek each 8 tourists move with two armed rangers who are familiar with the gorillas and whole forest habitat.

Being habituated it means the gorillas have been carefully exposed to human presence and have learned that humans are not a threat.  However, they are still cautious and act accordingly.  Before you get into the actual trek, ranger guides will take you through the briefing session where you are told the dos and don’ts and also taught safety precautions and what to do in case of any unpredictable circumstances. With precautions, guides and surety that the mountain gorillas have been fully habituated, you can have your gorilla trekking safari at peace.

Can gorillas attack human beings?

You should note that gorillas are wild animals and should be considered so putting in consideration the precautions given by the rangers. In case you act in a way that is suspicious to the gorillas and they feel uneasy, they may charge and act in a way of defense.

What triggers gorillas to act in defense include when they are surprised or threatened. Threatening them could mean beating your chest and looking into their eyes directly like you are picking up a fight. The typical response to threat by a silverback mountain gorilla includes making bluff charges by beating on their chest with aggressive sounds or running directly towards their target.  When the silverback gorilla charges towards someone in most cases it will stop just a few feet away just to wait for the target reaction.

are gorillas dangerous?

What do you do in case a gorilla charges towards you?

In case a gorilla charges towards you what then do you do, you definitely can’t fight this massive size of a giant. The most appropriate reaction is that you crouch down slowly, look away and act casual/with no intentions of threat. In this way, they will see you as non-threatening and therefore will move away and return to their family. These are rare happening that can be avoided when you follow the rules and regulations for the trek.

In extreme occurrences when the gorillas feel so uneasy during the trek, whether on a gorilla tour in Uganda or Rwanda gorilla trek safari, the ranger guides may be forced to end the trek before the maximum one hour spent with the gorillas comes to an end.

Gorilla Behavior

Gorillas are typically shy and reserved a reason as to why they are referred to as gentle giants, a description they well deserve.  Mountain gorillas are social animals with their lives centered on family. A normal typical day for a gorilla in the wild is one with play, foraging for food, taking care of the infants and protecting the family by the silverback.

At last are gorillas dangerous? The answer is no. Gorillas are gentle giants who are easily approachable on a trek that is led by trained guides and fully habituated to the presence of water. Take these to be some human related apes that survive in the jungle. Plan your gorilla safari today with the Ugandan Gorilla Rwanda trekking experts and have that lifetime

Reasons Why Tanzania Is the Best Safari Country.

Reasons Why Tanzania Is the Best Safari Country : There are several reasons to select a Tanzanian safari over those in other African countries, including the fact that Tanzania is frequently ranked as the ideal safari destination to go game viewing experience. The country is home to some of the most diverse wildlife populations on the continent, and many of its parks still lack boundary fences, which is uncommon in the modern era and makes for a far more genuine safari experience.
Reasons Why Tanzania Is the Best Safari Country
Tanzania was named the overall winner in Safari Booking’s most recent analysis of over 2,500 reviews submitted by both African travel experts and safari tourists. It is the most popular safari destination in Africa. 1,721 user reviews collected between July 1, 2016, and July 1, 2017 were utilized in the analysis, along with 969 reviews from 22 respected guidebook authors who wrote for Bradt, Frommer’s, Lonely Planet, and Footprint.

Tanzania has a stable government and less political unrest than other African countries, making it noticeably safer than other countries in the continent. Because of this, it is easily reachable by foreign visitors thanks to direct flights from both the north and the south, and it is an excellent spot to stop for anyone looking for an exciting safari experience.

The greatest parks and wildlife.
In addition to being abundant with wildlife, two of Tanzania’s Unesco World Heritage sites also serve as home to a variety of other difficult-to-find and highly sought-after animals, including the Big 5.
Many people who enjoy safaris will talk highly of the Serengeti. Thus, it should not be surprising that this is one of the most varied parks in the nation, with lots of chances to see wildlife. This has to be one of the wildest places on Earth, with early-year wildebeest migrations and predator stalking throughout the rest of the wilderness. Serengeti also offers a variety of unique accommodations, so you’re sure to find something to fit your needs, from luxury tented camps to more conventional lodges and chalets.
Even though it’s farther south, Selous Game Reserve is still breathtaking. As they stroll to the water’s edge for their daily drink, lions are likely to be spotted here more often than anyplace else on the continent. This is especially true during the drier months.

Rare Encounters with Rarer Animals.
Gombe, on the country’s eastern border, is one of the few places in the world where chimpanzee trekking safari is possible.
Because of its isolation, you can avoid the crowds and be sure to get the best lodging on the shores of Lake Tanganyika, which is a breathtaking sight, encircled by dense forest on all sides.
Reasons Why Tanzania Is the Best Safari Country
Scenic Landscapes and Topography.
One absolutely beautiful thing can be found in many safari destinations. Tanzania differs from other travel destinations due to its wide range of topographical splendour, including the immense variety of landscapes it offers.
It makes sense that both residents and visitors adore the Ngorongoro Crater. This is the world’s biggest and deepest unflooded caldera, which is created when a volcano collapses in on itself. This area’s hills give way to an amazing savannah covered in peaks, protecting a variety of wildlife that inhabits the area’s natural boundaries.
Then up in the Serengeti, you witness open plains to the south; mountainous rifts to the north; and veins of waterways that snake their way through the rest of the region. There’s no escaping the mesmerizing at every turn.
Reasons Why Tanzania Is the Best Safari Country
Land, On-Foot and Even Sky Safari Options Available.
Safaris these days are no longer restricted to four wheels. Tanzania must be one of the nations with the greatest capabilities when it comes to safari and, as such, has a variety of options for stalking the animals. Taking to the skies in a hot air balloon and silently soaring for an unhindered birds-eye view of the most breathtaking surroundings is one of the more well-liked methods.
Walking tours are also a fantastic choice if you’d rather have more intimate interactions. Discovering what lies beneath the towering grasses on foot, under the watchful eye of a knowledgeable and well-armed guide, is the ultimate way to get in touch with nature.

A Safari for All Seasons.
Although the dry and wet seasons in much of Africa can have an impact on the availability of wildlife, Tanzania offers a variety of safari experiences throughout the year.
The wettest months are usually March through April, when afternoon showers arrive in short, sharp bursts. However, this does not preclude going on a safari. You will undoubtedly see every kind of wildlife you could want to see if you travel to the northern regions.

Include Some Time On The Beach.
Tanzania is as famous amongst safari-goers as it is amongst those who chase the beach scene. This is understandable given that Zanzibar has developed over time into one of the world’s most well-served beach vacation spots.
In addition to the immaculate sand, the region has become a kitesurfing hotspot, and many visitors who venture into the outback opt to cap off their vacation with some R&R at one of the island’s numerous beach resorts.

Direct Access from the World’s Largest Airports.
Tanzania is home to numerous airports, many of which are served by direct flights run by well-known international carriers. For travelers travelling to the north or centre of the nation, Julius Nyerere Airport is a preferable choice than Kilimanjaro Airport.
The quantity of domestic airports is evidence of the region’s high level of travel, and with such a robust infrastructure, you can be sure to get to practically any part of the country for a reasonable price.

Researching a safari investment is crucial before committing, as it’s a significant choice. To make sure you have the vacation of your dreams, picking a location that offers a variety of wildlife along with a certain level of infrastructure and security is crucial. Tanzania has established itself as one of the most developed nations for managing such an influx of tourists, despite the fact that it still retains its sense of isolation. This is because so many people are now travelling there.
There must be a balance of comfort while maintaining this natural feel and Tanzania has arguably achieved this better than any other country in the world.

Why Ngorongoro Conservation Area Is A Must-Visit In Tanzania.

Why Ngorongoro Conservation Area Is A Must-Visit In Tanzania : Although Serengeti National Park is the first safari destination that always comes to mind when people are planning their dream trip to Tanzania. Of course, the Great Migration and the Lion King location are two compelling arguments against leaving the Serengeti. However, Tanzania has a tone more to offer, and missing them would be a huge disappointment. The well-known Ngorongoro Conservation Area in particular. What makes Tanzania’s Ngorongoro Conservation Area a must-see, then? Ten explanations for this are as follows:

World Heritage Site.
Any ardent tourist would want to visit as many World Heritage Sites as they could, particularly if the location offers experiences that are unimaginably amazing. Such a site is Ngorongoro Conservation Area, which has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979. The magnificent Ngorongoro Crater, which is renowned for being the biggest intact and inactive volcanic caldera on Earth, is its primary feature. The Crater, which was created by a significant explosion and collapse some two to three million years ago, was recognized as one of Africa’s Seven Natural Wonders in 2015. It is also known as “the cradle of humanity” by some people.

The vast Ngorongoro Conservation Area, which is actually larger than it appears, is home to a multitude of globally threatened species as well as extraordinarily abundant wildlife. Since it provides important evidence of human evolution and the dynamics of the human-environment interaction, it has also been one of the hubs for in-depth archaeological research for more than eight decades.

Africa’s Garden Of Eden.
The most common association between the term “Ngorongoro Conservation Area” and the human brain is the well-known Ngorongoro Crater. Furthermore, you really have no excuse for that.

The magnificent Ngorongoro Crater, known as the Garden of Eden of Africa, is home to roughly 25,000 animals, including large mammals, four of the Big Five, and ungulates. Additionally, it’s among the best locations to see animals that are in grave danger of extinction, such as golden cats, black rhinos, and wild hunting dogs. Ngorongoro Crater, home to one of the densest known populations of Maasai lions, promises an exciting, adrenaline-filled game. In actuality, it facilitates the Great Migration, the greatest animal migration in history. You see, the wildebeest calving season takes place in the regions surrounding the Ngorongoro Crater and Ndutu. Thousands of baby wildebeests will be giving birth during this period, and a variety of opportunistic predators in stealth and killing modes will be visible.
Some have compared this natural wonder to a “mini Africa in a bowl” because of its splendour. “Imagine a bowl of an incredible landscape filled with just about every African animal you can think of,” as one traveler put it.

Ngorongoro crater
Unique Setting.
Consider another location on Earth where you could witness such a singular environment featuring a variety of landscapes, an abundance of wildlife and avian species, and an ecosystem unlike any other.

Ngorongoro Conservation Area encompasses two major rivers, lakes, wetlands, grasslands, woodlands, and mountain forests. Not to mention Laetoli, Oldupai Gorge, and Ngorongoro Crater.

Maasai Village.
The Maasai tribe is the original inhabitants of this area. They even gave the location the name “Ngorongoro,” which translates to “gift of life.” They are arguably the most well-known indigenous group in the east, and visiting their village is undoubtedly a worthwhile safari experience.
Meet Maasai men and women, take in dancing and listening to their traditional music, watch a dramatic enactment, and perhaps even try on their red cloaks during your visit! You get to see an authentic social side of Africa and a taste of the rich Maasai culture, which is what enriches this experience.

masai village ngorongoro

Olduvai Gorge.
Olduvai Gorge is an excellent spot to go if you are passionate about archaeology or even if you just want to view significant paleontological records pertaining to the evolution of humankind. Being one of the most significant paleoanthropological sites worldwide, it helps us comprehend the evolution of early humans.

olduvai gorge
A Day-Tour.
The Crater, the primary attraction, is rather tiny. It has a surface area of 8,292 km2 (3,202 sq mi) and a depth of roughly 610 metres (2,000 feet). The best part is that animals are visible to everyone and have nowhere to hide. You can therefore see it eventually. If you’d like, you can even take a brief diversion to see Olduvai Gorge. When you stop to think about it, you see a lot in a mere half-day. Zebras, lions, elephants, wildebeests, and, if you’re lucky, black rhinos can be seen in every direction. Therefore, it would be very simple (and wise) to fit a safari into your itinerary to see the Ngorongoro Crater if you are on a tight schedule.
Amazing Sunrise and Sunset.
Daylight and nighttime transitions are frequently amazing times to see wildlife and study their behaviours. Apart from this, did we also mention the stunning sunrises and sunsets. The crater rim of Ngorongoro Crater is surrounded by jungles, creating a verdant landscape. The sun rising and slowly touching the green grasses of the savannah is a breathtaking sight to behold if you are fortunate enough to stand or stay at a lodge by the crater rim early in the morning. You can see golden hour and one of the most beautiful sunsets of your life if you arrive in the middle of the afternoon before the sun sets.
Very Near Serengeti.
The eastern portion of Serengeti National Park and the northern portion of Ngorongoro Conservation Area are bordered by shared land. Indeed, one of the locations where the spectacular wildebeest calving season takes place is Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

The majority of visitors to Tanzania aim to see the Serengeti. In actuality, the majority of them intend to remain in the vicinity. In case you’re looking for a less expensive accommodation choice, Ngorongoro Conservation Area might be the best choice. Not only is Ngorongoro extremely close to the Serengeti, but it offers a Tanzanian view that is equally as magnificent. A visit to the conservation area is simply incredibly convenient and time-saving if lodging is not a concern.
Self-Driving Is Okay.
In contrast to most Tanzanian parks, Ngorongoro Conservation Area permits self-driving tours. This has the benefit of allowing you to control your schedule and go through the tour at your own speed. However, there can be a lot of drawbacks. One, vehicles for rent can be costly and don’t have pop-up roofs that give you 360-degree views. Second, there are a lot of bad roads. Three, it’s possible that you won’t be able to see the greatest views and game. However, if you choose a top-notch Ngorongoro Crater safari operator, you can explore the region’s highlights in an incredibly pleasant, instructive, and enjoyable manner.

Breakfasts and Lunches like No Other.
What are your thoughts on having a picnic in the outdoors. There are designated picnic areas in the Ngorongoro Crater. Magnificent views are guaranteed whether you are eating at the car’s hood for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. In addition, wildlife is roaming freely. An elephant might even share that breakfast spread with you.

Highly Accessible.
The primary safari hub of Tanzania’s northern safari circuits, Arusha, is reasonably close to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Anyone who is pressed for time may find driving down to Ngorongoro extremely convenient as it only takes three hours from Arusha. Major attractions like Lake Manyara National Park and the Serengeti National Park are also nearby. Check out these amazing Ngorongoro Crater Safari tours if you want your vacation to go perfectly. You won’t look back on it.
Ngorongoro Crater Safari.
Along with the best parks and reserves in Tanzania, like Tarangire, Lake Manyara, and Serengeti Park, a safari typically includes a visit to Ngorongoro. To begin your planning, take a look at our Ngorongoro Crater Safari Tours. We also customize trips and can offer all levels of accommodation to suit your budget and preferences.

Top Safaris from Arusha Tanzania

Top Safaris from Arusha Tanzania : When one prepares of going to on a Tanzania safari, it is most likely that the city of Arusha will appear in at least one or two of the search pages. Why? The primary hub for the best safari parks in Tanzania, particularly those in the country’s north, is Arusha. This covers Ngorongoro Crater, Mount Kilimanjaro, and Serengeti. Arusha also has hubs for public transport that connects to other major cities on the continent, as well as both domestic and international airports. In this article, we will cover the most renowned safaris from Arusha Tanzania and information on how to get here, what you need to get here, etc.

Top Safaris from Arusha Tanzania

Major Safaris from Arusha.
Being the major safari gateway in northern Tanzania, a lot of safari parks starts from Arusha. The foremost ones are.

Arusha National Park.
Many travelers make a stopover to Arusha National Park for a day tour, either at the beginning or end of their African journey, as it is situated on the route to other northern safari circuit parks. In addition to the standard game drives, this wildlife park is the easiest to reach from Arusha and offers walking safaris and canoe trips. In this park, sightings of giraffes, elephants, hippos, zebras, buffaloes, and wildebeests are fairly common. Additionally, Mount Meru, the fifth-highest peak in Africa, is located there and provides the best introductory climb for inexperienced climbers.

Arusha National park

Tarangire National Park.
Home to Tanzania’s largest elephant population, Tarangire National Park is another renowned wildlife sanctuary. It is home to the greatest concentration of birds in Tanzania and four of the Big Five (elephant, lion, buffalo, and leopard). Often skipped by many because it is “off-the-path”, the park offers a slightly more unspoiled landscape compared to other popular northern safari parks.

Lake Manyara National Park.
The park is well known for its large population of elephants, tree-climbing lions, and abundance of lesser and greater flamingos near its soda lake. But do you know that Lake Manyara National Park also has a lush forest that gave inspiration to the popular Disney classic film, Tarzan? It is home to numerous baboons as well as other animals like giraffes and buffaloes.

Serengeti National Park.
Serengeti National Park is conceivably the most well-known and frequently photographed wildlife sanctuary worldwide. Its name causes echoes, drumrolls and chills down the spine because of its unparalleled wildlife splendor from the endless golden savannas to the magnanimous wildlife concentration and diversity including abundance of sightings of the Big Five to the world-famous Great Wildebeest Migration. Ngorongoro Conservatory Area.
The world’s largest inactive volcanic caldera, the Ngorongoro Crater, is the primary attraction of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The caldera is home to the Big Five and is one of the best locations to see endangered black rhinos. In addition to having an abundance of wildlife, Ngorongoro provides a picturesque backdrop ideal for outdoor picnics. Additionally, it is close to Serengeti National Park, where a portion serves as one of the backdrops for the thrilling Great Migration’s calving season.

Ngorongoro crater

Mount Kilimanjaro.
Mount Kilimanjaro is the world’s highest free-standing volcano, currently in a dormant state. At 5895 metres (19,340 feet) in height, it is well-known for its magnificent snow-capped feature, which is present year-round.
This attraction, while not strictly a safari, is usually the high point of any trip to Africa. Mount Kilimanjaro, a well-known mountain, continues to attract a sizable number of tourists each year. Thus, hiking Kilimanjaro is a viable option for those with an adventurous spirit who wish to experience the mountain. It provides a variety of routes, each with varying degrees of difficulty, as well as variations in the number of climbing days and acclimatization rates. You can easily book treks with a tour operator.

How to Get To Arusha.
It takes roughly 12 hours to get to Arusha from Dar es Salaam, 6 hours to get to Arusha from Nairobi, Kenya, and 17 hours to get to Kampala, Uganda. There are flights from its airports to Zanzibar, a well-liked beach resort. The average flight time is typically.
Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) is the primary entry point into Arusha. It provides domestic and international flights and visitors can easily take a light aircraft to an airstrip in the safari park they’re visiting or a vehicle to drive to the park (these are usually arranged by a tour operator).

The two airports that serve Arusha are as follows:
Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) is home to frequent flights to and from various hubs across the world. It is located just 60 kilometres from the city centre, about 80 minutes by road, or 20 minutes from Arusha Airport. Direct flights are available from Addis Ababa, Nairobi, Dar es Salaam, Amsterdam via KLM, Doha via Qatar Airways, and Zanzibar.

Domestic hub Arusha Airport handles flights to and from Kilimanjaro, Dar es Salaam, and Zanzibar.
For a cheaper way to Arusha, some tourists prefer to skip the direct route and fly into either Nairobi in Kenya or to Dar es Salaam, the capital of Tanzania, and then take a connecting flight to either Kilimanjaro or Arusha.

Other Things To Do In Arusha
Visit the Clock Tower Circle. There have been rumors that the clock tower, located halfway between Cape Town and Cairo, is the centre of Africa. Even though it’s just a story, it tells an intriguing tale, and the tower serves as a great place for locals and visitors to gather.
Explore museums and galleries that showcase the people and their art as well as the rich culture and history of the city.

Explore the Cultural Heritage Centre, Old Boma Museum, and Central and Kilombero Markets to hone your negotiating skills.
Visit Meserani Snake Park. In addition to having a curio market and a Maasai Cultural Museum, it is home to fifty different species of snakes from eastern and southern Africa. Eat, drink and party the African way. Arusha has a string of restaurants that you can try plus it also has some bars and clubs.
It’s true that Arusha is more than just a quaint, busy town where visitors begin their safari. In addition, it’s a lovely area of Tanzania with lots to see and do. It can captivate guests with a certain charm. It also boasts an African-style party scene, which is probably a nice change of pace from the wildlife safaris you have either completed or are planning. Take some time to explore the city rather than using it as a base for safari activities. It will be worthwhile.

What To Count On In A Safari In Tanzania

What To Count On In A Safari In Tanzania : Most people have the dream of visiting Tanzania, which is undoubtedly the best destination in the world, on a safari. For others, it’s a dream come true seeing wildlife; for others, it’s a way to pursue a passion. For still others, it’s just another item on their bucket list. No matter why one is travelling, there is always a little sense of unease about what to expect from a Tanzanian safari. So, to lessen the tension, these are the nine things you should anticipate:

Diverse Landscapes.
Tanzania is endowed with an extremely varied environment that includes walled cities, golden savannas, plains, mountains, forests, waterfalls, and islands that provide a beautiful tropical paradise. You can see these vistas in breathtaking display during a normal safari. You will be able to drive on uneven roads some of which are nearly impassable at some points while taking in breathtaking views of the surrounding environment.
One of the most widely visited parks that offers a unique landscape is the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Ngorongoro Crater, Africa’s “Garden of Eden” and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the main safari attraction of the region. A vast volcanic crater, it is home to 25,000 huge creatures, including roughly 62 powerful lions and 26 black rhinoceroses. The region never lacks water, and its breathtaking views make it impossible to leave on any list of must-see African attractions.

Another well-known safari destination with a breathtaking scenery is Mount Kilimanjaro. It is the tallest free-standing mountain in the globe as well as the highest peak in Africa. You should therefore prepare for a wide variety of sceneries if you are going on a safari in Tanzania.

Amazing Wildlife.
Tanzania has long been known for having an amazing diversity and concentration of wildlife, including a wide variety of birds. It is typical to see a pride of lions or hyenas in one area and a herd of zebras and wildebeests in another. In fact, many visitors have confirmed that the number of animals they saw on other safari destinations like South Africa in, say, 2 weeks is the number of animals they saw on a safari in Tanzania in just 5 days.

tanzania wildlife

You must keep in mind that a successful safari requires a good guide. Tanzania is a country rich in wildlife, yet it can still be difficult to find the creatures, especially if you don’t know where to go or how to search. You will get the opportunity to visit “where the action happens” because of the drivers, guides, and rangers.

Great Wildebeest Migration, which takes place every year in Tanzania, is a famous wildlife phenomenon that attracts millions of wildebeests, zebras, gazelles, and kudus as they travel clockwise over the East African plains in search of better grazing and rain. As long as you have an expert guide to lead your tour, you will undoubtedly be able to witness this migration, which takes place every year throughout the month of May when you visit the Serengeti.

Long Drives An Early Start.
You may spend as much as four to five hours inside the safari truck because each park is large and it will take some time to locate a wide variety of animals. Since most animals are most active in the early morning, right before sunrise, your safari usually begins at that hour.

There will be a lot of bumping and bouncing due to the state of the road, and you will spend hours under the scorching African sun. Animals in Africa are free to roam wherever, unlike at a zoo where they are kept in one area. This implies that it Tanzania may take some time to observe lions, giraffes, zebras, cheetahs, and other creatures. But fear not the forests will never cease to amaze you. is home to a vast variety of bird species as well.

tanzania wildlife

Changing Weather.
Tanzania only experiences the wet and dry seasons because it is so close to the equator. But weather patterns can also be rather erratic. Yes, it is mainly sunny, but it also occasionally rains. Rain can fall for a few hours or as little as five minutes at times, or it can fall continuously. There are days when it’s hot and muggy, days when it’s cold, and days when it’s a combination of these. Thus, pack light-colored clothing, sunscreen, a hat or cap, and maybe some rain gear.

Minimal Phone and Internet Coverage.
On a safari, don’t anticipate fantastic phone coverage. The majority of places, particularly isolated camps, have no cell phone service. Almost all campgrounds and lodges, even the most isolated ones, offer WiFi, so you can stay connected online, check your email and share pictures on social media. Nevertheless, don’t hold your expectations up if you want to stream a movie, play an online game, or do anything else that calls for a lot of internet capacity because internet connections can occasionally be erratic or patchy.

Food Quality Varies.
Safari food is delicious. You can choose to eat at your lodge or camp, on a picnic mat or table, or even on your safari vehicle, right in the middle of the wildlife! To help you plan ahead, you will receive an itinerary or timetable that will let you know when your meals and snacks will be provided. You can also ask for any diet limitations you may have, and chefs cook your meals especially, so you don’t need to worry.

Although the food in the lodges is excellent, you bring your own “lunchbox” on safari, so your options may be limited because it must be eaten over the course of many hours. Common choices include boiled eggs, fried chicken, white bread sandwiches, and various fruits. However, breakfast and supper will more than make up for it, as lodges frequently serve buffet-style meals that feature both local and foreign fare, giving you plenty of alternatives.

Exciting Activities for All Types of Travelers.
Taking a safari involves more than just driving and seeing animals. Whether you go alone, with a partner, or with your family or group, there are additional things that you can undoubtedly enjoy as well! Special extras include mountain hiking, bonfires in the wild where you can relax and share stories with other travellers, hot air balloon rides where you can float around famous parks and spot amazing wildlife scattered across the plains, and even a beach escape to round off your African vacation.

Raw Sense of Adventure.
You will be able to experience “being close to the stars” at night since the glittering lights seem to be right within your reach when you are far from the city and in the middle of the wild. You will also be surrounded by the incredible sounds of nature. You may have seen mosquitoes and tsetse flies while here, but it is part of the real deal.
You can’t expect an elegant bathroom in the middle of the wilderness when you’re on safari and nature calls at any time, can you. There aren’t any restrooms around, so you’ll have to “do it in the bush.” There won’t be an onboard lavatory on little charter planes either. So remember to pack a hand sanitizer and plenty of toilet paper.

Hearing the sounds of animals when you wake up will also transport you to the outdoors. The majority of camps are placed in strategic locations close to animal gathering spots, such as waterholes, or regions where herds congregate. It is completely typical to wake up to the sound of chirping birds, hippos snorting by your window, or even zebras by your terrace, as animals tend to be most active in the early hours of the day.

In your specially designed safari vehicle, you will go on game drives. You may travel in open-sided safari vehicles with no walls or in closed safari vehicles with huge windows and a pop-up roof, depending on your trip operator.

Unique Accommodations.
Tanzania offers a wide variety of choices for accommodation, from low-cost camping tents, popular among backpackers and independent travellers who prefer to rough it, to ordinary lodges or tented camps with basic amenities, to luxurious hotel-style lodges and lavish tented camps that are just magnificent in every way.
You will either be staying in a designated wilderness area with breathtaking views and free-roaming animals, or you will be staying in camps or lodges that are ideally situated near wildlife encounters or other attractions. This will depend on the kind of accommodation you select.

Reminder: Southern Vs Northern Safari Circuits.

In Tanzania, the safari parks located in the northern and southern regions are typically discussed while discussing safari experiences. World-famous parks including Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro Crater, Serengeti National Park, and Mount Kilimanjaro are all included in the more popular northern safari park.
On the flip side, Tanzania’s more isolated southern safari circuit often offers a more unspoiled and natural environment. This region of Tanzania is home to several sizable parks, such as Mikumi National Park and Ruaha National Park, in addition to the well-known Selous Game Reserve.

Typical Safari Day.

You wake up early in the morning and perceive a fascinating choir of animal sounds. Breakfast will be provided in either your chalet or the camp/lodge’s shared dining room. Occasionally, you will also eat breakfast while driving; your tour operator will take care of all meal preparations. Then, as the sun gently rises and begins to illuminate the savannah with its golden rays, you will drive to a wildlife sanctuary or park to begin your day.

Your driver/guide will take you to the most breathtaking locations so you can enjoy breathtaking views and incredible animal encounters. You might even be fortunate enough to witness predator-prey or predator-predator encounters. You are going to enjoy a picnic in the bush come lunchtime. Once more, a chef will prepare the food, and you’ll be able to savour a substantial dinner in the middle of the wilderness.

You will resume your game drive after lunch to see more animals and breathtaking scenery before you ultimately arrive at your lodge or camp, generally right before sunset. After dinner is served at the lodge, you can spend time relaxing in your own room or lodge or socializing with other travellers over a few drinks at the bar, a small gathering or a bonfire.
At other times, safaris may conclude after lunch, allowing you to return to your accommodation in the early afternoon for your own free time. You can sleep, ride a bike, go on a walk, or engage in other extra activities.

A Tanzanian Safari Is a Once-In-A-Lifetime Experience.
There is never a same adventure in Tanzania twice. Even seasoned safari visitors are still surprised by something new every time, in fact. As a result, even while you can plan ahead for the necessities, such as what clothes, medication, equipment, and other accessories to pack, you can never be totally ready for the surprises that await you on a safari. That being said, a safari in Tanzania is an unforgettable safari experience that everyone should have with Select Adventure Safaris.
